Oregon Coast Anglers, Fishing Basics Class – 2017
The Fishing Basics Class was offered to Junior High School students in the Braves Sessions at the Reedsport Community Charter School, January 17 – 20 and January 23 – 26. There were two ninety minute classes offered in the AM. Thirteen students signed up for Fishing Basics. The objective was to teach them what they need to know to fish local waters. Three local fishermen were guest speakers: Bill Taylor, Harold Ettelt, and Pete Heley, the Editor of the Outdoor Section of the Umpqua Post. In addition, Evan Leonetti, ODF&W Biologist, Roseburg Office, helped the students with fish identification, fishing regulations, and fish conservation. A field trip to the Gardiner STEP Hatchery was scheduled, where Doug Buck, Hatchery Manager, gave them a tour. ODF&W granted an Educational Fish Permit that enabled a graduation field trip on January 26th to Lake Marie. No fishing licenses were required and students had an opportunity to put into practice what they learned.
